Graffiti is an artform born from marginalized communities in response to systems of oppression. Its practice has been criminalized, and its artists are targeted, profiled, harassed, and assaulted. Nevertheless, it is the visual legacy of hip hop culture and the manifestation of creative energy through paint. The local legacy of the Twin Cities graffiti scene is the result of multiple generations of artists committed to the advancement of the form. Born of need, born from community, passed through families, re-invented, re-imagined and constantly searching for its next incarnation.
The visual vocabulary of graffiti in Minnesota has been shaped through three distinct generations of painters. Inherently intertwined, though by no means derivative, these artists have created distinct creative communities that celebrate authenticity, innovation, and ambition. By highlighting works from locally recognized artists and their contemporaries, the 2023 exhibition is a testimonial to the magnitude and reach of Minnesota’s talent in an under-documented and underappreciated art form.
Opening reception Friday, July 14th, 5-7 pm in the gallery. Free and open to all.
