Peyton Scott Russell (DAESK)

Minneapolis-based artist Peyton Scott Russell stands as a pioneer at the very forefront of graffiti's local creative genesis—a visionary conduit, teacher, and revolutionary channeling the raw energy of this burgeoning art form since its earliest inception. His unwavering commitment to graffiti as a vocabulary in painting and a formal movement within the broader dialogue of art and art history has positioned him as a true leader in the field.

With a B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Peyton's journey into the world of graffiti was ignited by the seminal 1984 film, Style Wars, a catalyst that propelled him into a lifelong dedication to this expressive medium. For over three decades, Peyton has not only honed his craft as a professional artist but has also tirelessly served as an arts instructor, passing on his unparalleled knowledge and passion to the next generation.

Peyton's vision extends beyond his personal artistic practice; it encompasses a profound commitment to graffiti education and the cultivation of creative lettering as a fine art. Through his organization, SPRAYFiNGER®, Peyton is on a mission to elevate graffiti's status as a teachable discipline. Supported by a Bush Foundation Fellowship (2012-2014), he devotes himself to teaching, studying, and practicing Graffiti Education & The Art of Creative Lettering™. Collaborating with schools, educators, and fellow artists, Peyton designs curriculum, outlines and lesson plans aimed at deepening the understanding of graffiti's cultural significance and artistic merit.

From Minnesota to Tel Aviv, Peyton's influence extends. Through his personal artwork and educational initiatives, he has touched the lives of individuals across diverse communities, developing a deeper appreciation for graffiti's transformative power and enduring legacy.
